Weddings in Kansas City, with true-to-life color and a camera you’ll mostly forget is there. Eight years in, I still get excited walking into a venue I haven’t worked before.
Most of the day, I’m paying attention to the light, the room, and the people in it, not directing a photoshoot in the middle of your party. You stay present. I keep up.
Photography isn't my full-time job, and that's on purpose. It means every wedding I take on is one I actually want to be at, and I show up to it rested, excited, and completely yours for the day.
Twelve to twenty weddings a year. Enough to stay sharp, few enough that yours gets my full attention.

I edit every image by hand. The red exit sign, the wall plug, the cord snaking across the floor, gone. When you’re paying real money for wedding photos, those small fixes should be a given.
I also show up with the gear to back it up: two camera bodies, dual card slots, off-camera flash, and a backup system I’m a little too proud of. I don’t take this lightly.

I find the good light and put you in it. Then I give you somewhere to start, like standing belly to belly, and something to talk about so you stop thinking about the camera. That’s when you melt into each other, and that’s where the best photos are.

You’re the client, but your guests matter too. I’ll wrangle a forty-person family photo with kindness, bustle a dress, reattach a veil, and I have, for the record, cleaned up dog vomit on a wedding day. Your planner runs the day. I just make it easier.

My husband gave me a Canon Rebel for my 23rd birthday. I shot sunsets and flower closeups like every other creative woman in the 2010s, and weddings terrified me. Rightfully so. I wasn’t good yet.
Then I assisted at one, and that was it. I loved the rush of running the day behind the scenes, making sure everything went off well and getting the photos while it did. I still love that part.
I named the business Humbly Hewn on purpose. Humbly for the Midwestern sensibility, hewn for the handmade part, every image edited by me.
These days I shoot from Kansas City, head back to Detroit every year, and keep a full-time job I really like. That’s why photography stays a choice, and why every wedding still gets the version of me that can’t wait to get there.
